Abstract

Pelletable catalysts suitable for use in a continuous process for hydrogenating non-esterified fatty acids into alcohols are made by mixing CuO, Cn(OH)2 or CuCO3 with the corresponding Zn compound and working the mixture up into a paste with dry CrO3 and water or aqueous CrO3 solution and then drying, grinding and pressing into tablet form and subjecting the tablets to a preliminary reduction process with hydrogen or other reducing gas at 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. In an example 800 cm.3 hourly of paraffin oxidation acids of chain lengths C10 to C20 and with an acid number of 235 are passed at 250-270 DEG C. through the contact prepared in the above manner, the rate of hydrogen circulation being set to 50 Nm3 per litre of catalyst per hour and the pressure adopted being 230 atmospheres. The product is a colourless liquid having an acid number below 0.2, saponification coefficients below 3 and OH number about 250.ALSO:Hydrogenation catalysts are made by mixing copper oxide, hydroxide or carbonate with the corresponding zinc compound and working up into a paste with dry CrO3 and water on aqueous H2CrO4 and then drying, grinding, and pressing into tablet form and reducing at 220 DEG C. to 300 DEG C..
