Abstract
A method for producing FeMn or FeCr in a blast furnace using a carbonaceous reducing agent and slagging agent, with or without added scrap or other metal bearing material, includes the step of injecting into the reaction zone during the smelting process, lime or other basic slag forming reagents, with or without fluxes in order to increase the ratio of basic to acidic slag constituents to a value in excess of 1.6:1 and calcium carbide or other carbonaceous material (e.g. coal dust). The slag forming materials may be lime, dolomite, alumina or fluorspar. The additional materials, which are preferably preheated, are added in a fluidized form through tuyeres which may be conventionally placed or may be in the furnace bosh.
