Abstract
Alkali metal quaternary ammonium silicates of the general formula <FORM:1028561/C4-C5/1> are mixed with polyphosphates, e.g. tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, in forming liquid detergents. In the above formula M is sodium and/or potassium, R1 and R2 are C1 to C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R3 and R4 are C1 to C4 alkyl hydroxy alkyl, amino alkyl or quaternary ammonium alkyl, or groups which together with the nitrogen atom form a morpholine, pyrrolidine or piperazine ring.ALSO:Alkali metal quaternary ammonium silicates of the general formula <PICT:1028561/C6-C7/1> when present in water in contact with iron have a rust inhibiting effect. On the above formula M is sodium and/or potassium, R1 and R2 are C1 to C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R3 and R4 are C1 to C4 alkyl hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl or quaternary ammonium alkyl, or groups which together with the nitrogen atom form a morphaline, pyrrolidine or piperazine ring.ALSO:Alkali metal quaternary ammonium silicates of the general formula <FORM:1028561/C1/1> when mixed with alum may be used as coagulants in the treatment of raw waters and when present in water in contact with iron have a rust-inhibiting effect. In the above formula, M is sodium and/or potassium, R1 and R2 are C1 to C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R3 and R4 are C1 to C4 alkyl hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl or quaternary ammonium alkyl, or groups which together with the nitrogen atom form a morpholine, pyrrolidine or piperazine ring.ALSO:Alkali metal quaternary ammonium silicates of the formula <FORM:1028561/C2/1> wherein M is sodium and/or potassium, R1 and R2 are C1 to C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R3 and R4 are C1 to C4 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl or quaternary ammonium alkyl groups or groups which together with the nitrogen atom form a morpholine, pyrrolidine or piperazine ring, X is from 0,25 to 2,5; Y is from 2 to 10, Z is from 1 to 40, especially compounds wherein X is 0,5 to 1,5, Z is 3 to 20, both R1 and R2 betahydroxyethyl, and R3 and R4 are both betahydroxyethyl, and in particular sodium and potassium tetraethanolammonium silicates, sodium N,N-bis-betahydroxyethyl - morpholinium silicates, sodium - N,N,N1,N1 - tetrabetahydroxyethyl piperazinium silicates, sodium-N,N,N1-tris betahydroxyethyl - N1 - [2 - (triethanolammonium)-ethyl]-piperazinium silicates, and sodium tetramethylammonium silicates may be made by mixing an aqueous solution of quaternary ammonium hydroxide with an alkali metal silicate, in the case of alkylene oxide residue containing products, reacting this mixture with an up to C4 alkylene oxide, cooling or concentrating until crystals appear and isolating the crystals. An alternative method for the alkoxylated products prepares the alkoxylated amines first prior to mixing with the alkali metal silicate; the preferred alkylene oxide is ethylene oxide. The preferred products are those wherein R's are all C2H4OH and X : Y : Z, 0,7 : 3,8 : 11 or 0,3 : 3,3 : 8. The examples refer.ALSO:Alkali metal quatunary ammonium silicates of the general formula <FORM:1028561/C3/1> are mixed with, say, protein and water to give adhesive compositions. In the above formula, M is sodium and/or potassium, R1 and R2 are C1 to C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R3 and R4 are C1 to C4 alkyl hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl or quatunary ammonium alkyl, or groups which together with the nitrogen atom form a morpholine, pyrrolidine or piperazine ring.
