Abstract

1,027,734. Rotary-piston I.C. engines. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A.G. March 27, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 12099/63. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the trochoidal n and n+1 lobe type, the planetary motion of the piston 3 (Fig. 1, not shown) is controlled by gearing comprising internally toothed gear-rings 5, 7 which are attached to the piston and lateral parts 9 of the engine housing, respectively, and coupled to one another by pairs of gear-wheels 11, 12, each pair of gear-wheels being rotatably mounted in bearings 14 on either side of an eccentric 1 carrying the piston. To minimize back-lash in said gearing, the pairs of gear-wheels are connected to one another by a torsion rod 17 which during assembly of the engine is stressed by rotation of the gear-rings 7, and optionally the gear-rings 5, relative to one another before they are secured. Alternatively, the gearing comprises internally-toothed gearrings 24, 26 (Fig. 3, not shown) which are attached to the piston and side walls 27 of the housing, respectively, and coupled to one another by two pairs of gear-wheels 22, 23 on each side of the piston, the gear-wheels in each pair being connected to one another by a torsionally-resilient hub 29 and conic members 33 which can be tightened by a bolt 32. During assembly of the engine, back-lash in the gearing is minimized by rotation of the gear-wheels in each pair relative to one another. The pairs of gear-wheels on each side of the piston are rotatably mounted on a disc 31 symmetrically on either side of a plane 19 (Fig. 2, not shown) which contains the axes of rotation 20, 21 of the piston and eccentric, said disc being attached to the eccentric.
