Abstract
1,027,504. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 31, 1963 [Feb. 5, 1962; June 26, 1962], No. 3942/63. Heading B3R. In electric welding, a consumable electrode is maintained in continuous short circuiting contact with the weld pool. The resistance heating of the electrode by the passage of welding current may be supplemented by heating of the work by arc, flame, induction or radiant heat. Current is supplied to a consumable electrode 5 (Fig. 1, not shown) by an A.C. or D.C. supply H through a contact guide which is spaced at a substantial distance from the work P to provide sufficient resistance heating of the electrode 8. An inert gas, e.g. argon or helium, is passed through a nozzle N. In a modification an inert gas shielded non-consumable electrode is used to fuse the work and the consumable electrode is fed into the weld pool behind the arc. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) a constricted arc torch having an electrode E<SP>1</SP> that is water-cooled or of a refractory material is used to fuse the work. Argon, helium or argon-hydrogen mixtures are passed through the constricting nozzle N<SP>1</SP> and a shielding gas containing one or more of argon helium, nitrogen and carbon dioxide is fed through a surrounding nozzle 18. The process may be used for jointing or cladding. Aluminium, magnesium and ferrous metals such as stainless steel may be so welded.
