Abstract

Calcium sulphate hemihydrate is prepared by calcining calcium sulphate dihydrate, which is produced in the treatment of phosphorus-containing minerals and contaminated with water-soluble phosphoric acids or water-soluble salts thereof, to form by-product calcium sulphate hemihydrate, and then treating an aqueous suspension of the hemihydrate with compounds which form insoluble salts with the phosphoric acids or their water-soluble salts and then dehydrating the calcium sulphate dihydrate formed to calcium sulphate hemihydrate by means of a second calcination. Suitable compounds which form insuluble salts are hydrated lime, Portland or similar cements, urotropin, iron-III-ions or iron-III-sulphate. The by-product hemihydrate may be mixed with said compounds by means of a granulator plate or in mixing vessel or by means of a powder-moistening apparatus.
