Abstract
In the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate by effecting an esterification or ester-interchange reaction between terephthalic acid or a dialkyl ester of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol followed by polycondensing the resulting ester, there is used as a catalyst, at least for the polycondensation reaction, titanium trichloride, ammonium orthotitanate or ammonium metatitanate. Additional catalysts may be used, such as compounds of Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Ba, Sr, La, Al, Ph, Sn, Ti, Sh, Co, Ge, Mn, Nb, Co, Fe, Nd or Et (e.g. potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, calcium acetate or cobaltous chloride) or tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide. Minor amounts of other polyester-forming reagents, e.g. other dicarboxylic acids (or their dialkyl esters), other glycols or hydroxycarboxylic acids may be included. Polyesterification may also be effected in the presence of the usual phosphorus compounds, pigments or delustrants Examples describe the reaction of dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol, with or without bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) adipate or bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) isophthalate and the reaction of free terephthalatic acid and ethylene glycol.
