Abstract

A shaped article is prepared by combining a filler or reinforcing element and a polymeric mix comprising a normally liquid polymer prepared from 75 to 100% of a C4 to C6 conjugated diolefin and 25 to 0% of a monovinyl monomer and curing the combination at a temperature of from 330 DEG to 550 DEG F. in the presence of a polyperoxide catalyst having a half-life of at least 2 minutes at 300 DEG F. The filler may be a silica (precipitated, ground or quartz), clay, alumina or calcium carbonate. The reinforcing element may be glass fibre, asbestos, mica, vegetable fibre, silk, hair, nylon, or a metallic material such as iron, aluminium or copper. The exemplified peroxides are 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-(t - butylperoxy) - hexane, 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - di - (t - butylperoxy) - hexyne, di - t - butyldiperoxyphthalate or 2,5 - dimethylhexane-2,5-di-(peroxybenzoate). The liquid polymer may be mixed with rubbers, such as natural rubber, butyl rubber, or SBR, or polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, EPR, or polyisobutylene. The mix may contain up to 2% of a polymerizable monomer, e.g. vinyl tris-(2-methoxyethoxy)-silane or diethylamino-ethyl methacrylate as a size for the glass fibre or to aid dispersion of the filler. Small amounts of solvent may be used for the same purpose.ALSO:A glass fibre reinforcement is coated with a composition comprising a normally liquid copolymer prepared from 75 to 100% of a conjugated diene and 25 to 0% of a monovinyl compound and a polyperoxide catalyst which has a half-life of at least 2 minutes at 300 DEG F. The assembly is then cured at a temperature of from 330 to 550 DEG F. Peroxides specified are 2, 5-dimethyl-2, 5-di(t-butylperoxy)-hexane, 2, 5-dimethyl-2, 5-di(t-butylperoxy)-hexane, di-t-butyl diperoxyphthalate, and 2, 5-dimethylhexane-2, 5-di(peroxy-benzoate. The mix may also contain other polymeric ingredients, e.g. natural rubber, butyl rubber, SBR, polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene rubber, or polyisoeutylene. The mix may also contain a small proportion of a polymerizable monomer such as vinyl tris(2-methoxyethoxy) silane and diethyl-aminoethyl methacrylate. The glass fibre may also be treated with an unsaturated silane monomer. The composition may contain fillers, e.g. silica, chalk, whiting and alumina, and antioxidants, e.g. di-t-butyl p-cresol.
