Abstract

Foamed glass is formed by first sintering a mixture of glass containing SO3 and active carbon in a steam atmosphere and then foaming in known manner. The steam atmosphere may be at a pressure of e.g. 200-760 Torr. The steam may be introduced as such or may be produced during the combustion of hydrogen-containing fuels. The sintering temperature is preferably such that a gas-tight mass is formed; the temperature may then be raised to 800-900 DEG C. and the material caused to foam.
