1,026,985. Drum brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINENUND TURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES.]. Oct. 31, 1963 [Dec. 7, 1962], No. 43025/63. Heading F2E. In a combined internal and external shoe drum brake including a brake carrier 17 to which is attached a wheel brake cylinder 22 and a first brake shoe 3, the brake carrier 17 is slidable in a radial direction on a flange 18 of an axle tube 19, the second brake shoe 4 is guided in a gallery disposed on the brake carrier 17 and the brake shoe 4 operated by the piston of the wheel brake cylinder or by a cable system 41 acting through a lever 25 fulcrumed at 27 to apply the brake and the brake carrier is prevented from rotation in a circumferential direction by abutments formed by brackets provided on a flange 18 of the axle tube 19. The brake carrier 17 and the flange 18 on the axle tube 19 are interconnected by a slackadjusting device 20 which automatically compensates for lining wear. The adjusting device 20 consists of a pin 35 rigidly connected to the brake carrier 17 and housed in a sleeve 28 associated frictionally with the flange 18 a clearance X corresponding to the brake shoe clearance. Lining wear causes the brake carrier 17 to move the adjusting pin 35 towards the axis of the axle tube 19 and the slack-adjusting sleeve 28 is moved to approach one end of the slot 34 as the lining wear increases. A return spring 42 pulls the brake carrier 17 back by the amount X when the brake is released so that the spherical portion 36 of the pin 35 abuts the other side of the passage in the sleeve 28. Members 38 are disposed on torque taking brackets 37 formed on the flange 18 to reduce noise and wear (Fig. 2, not shown). The construction of the brake carrier is such that it acts as a brake back plate to protect the brake members from dirt and moisture. Springs 39 prevent rattle of the brake carrier 17 when guided on the flange 18.
