1,025,678. Cutting by fusion. KJELLBERG ELEKTRODEN & MASCHINEN G.m.b.H. Dec. 27, 1962, No. 48715/62. Heading B3V. [Also in Division H5] A plasma arc torch (see Divisions H3-H5) for cutting metals has a nozzle diameter of 1 mm. or less, giving a very small diameter, supersonic, plasma jet, whereby the extent of the thermally-disturbed zone in the cut metal is reduced. A small volume plasma 4, at a pressure of 30 to 100 atmospheres, is formed in the discharge chamber 7 between the cathode 2 and nozzle inlet 8, the diameter of which may be 0À02 to 0À2 mm. Either the workpiece 6 or the water-cooled member 10 may be connected as anode, and either argon or a nitrogen/ hydrogen gas mixture employed, a coil (Fig. 1, not shown) round chamber 7 providing an axial magnetic field to restrict the arc. The torch may have a plurality of nozzles for a single cathode, and may be coupled mechanically, electrically, or photo-electrically to a pantograph for cutting profiles in metals or semi-conductors; the latter may be spotheated by using a pulsed supply for the torch.
