Abstract
A solid substrate is coated with a continuous film of synthetic tetrasilicic fluorine mica platelets, said film being characterized by a thermal conductivity of less than 0.5 B.T.U. units and an air resistance (by ASTM test number D.726) greater than 1500 seconds. Preferably the film is from 0,1 to 2 mils thick. The coating may be applied from an aqueous suspension containing up to 25% of the platelets, by brushing, spraying or dipping: the suspension may also contain particles of metals, metal oxides, silica, various clays, vermiculite or asbestos, or synthetic aluminium silicate fibres. The substrate may be of metal, wood, cork, paper, fibreboard, cotton, polyamide, polyester, polyolefin or neoprene, and may be a sheet, film or fibre.ALSO:A solid substrate is coated with a continuous film of synthetic tetrasilicic fluorine mica platelets, said film being characterised by a thermal conductivity of less than 0.5 B.T.U. units and an air resistance (by ASTM test number D. 726) greater than 1500 seconds. Preferably the film is from 0.1 to 2 mils thick. The coating may be applied from an aqueous suspension containing up to 25% of the platelets, by brushing, spraying or dipping: the suspension may also contain particles of metals, metal oxides, silica, various clays, vermiculite or asbestos, or synthetic aluminium silicate fibres. The coatings produce flame-resistance. The substrate may be of wood, cork, paper, fibre-board or cotton, and may be a sheet, film or fibre. The individual fibres of such porous materials may be coated by impregnating the material; such impregnated material not only shows resistance to air passage and flame, but also is of superior strength to the untreated product.
