Abstract

1,025,583. Welding by fusion. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Aug. 19, 1964 [Aug. 20, 1963], No. 32924/63. Heading B3R. In the butt-welding of tubes from the inside using an inert gas shielded non-consumable electrode, the pressure in the tubes is varied to reduce drooping of the molten metal under the influence of gravity. Tubes T, T<SP>1</SP> in a horizontal position are internally welded by an organ shielded torch WT as described in Specification 913,207 and the open end of the tubes T, T<SP>1</SP> is connected to a rotary control valve driven by a motor M which also rotates the electrode of the torch WT. The valve CV closes the end of the tubes T, T<SP>1</SP> to allow the pressure to build up when the overhead part of the weld is made, connects the tubes T, T<SP>1</SP> to atmosphere when the upright portions of the seam are welded and connects the tubes T, T<SP>1</SP> to a source of suction, e.g. a fan V, when the bottom of the tubes T, T<SP>1</SP> is being welded.
