Abstract
1,024,869. Thermal conductivity cell. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. Sept. 7, 1964 [Oct. 1, 1963; March 20, 1964], Nos. 38522/63 and 11836/64. Heading G1N. A device forming part of apparatus for measuring the thermal conductivity of a gas comprises two blocks 1, 2, Fig. 1, held together by screws 6 and separated by a wafer A (e.g. of aluminium), having one or more slots 4, Fig. 2, (not shown) each of which with the blocks defines a small cell (e.g. 1 micro litre) containing a platinum resistance element or elements 8. Further aluminium foil gaskets 3a may be provided, and the blocks 1, 2 may be of stainless steel or "Duralumin" (Registered Trade Mark). Support wires 8a of noble metal pass through ceramic insulators 10 and act as electrical connections to the element,and the element is tensioned by leaving the upper portion of one support wire free of insulation so that it can flex. Gas flow ports 7,are provided in the part 1. The resistance elements 8 may alternatively be supported between two mica wafers 3c, 3d, Fig.3 (not shown) having coinciding slots forming each cell and the elements may be tensioned by small springs. In this case electrical connections are provided by wires 8a which pass through the part 2 as before and also through the lower wafer. The element may be supported by quartz fibres secured between the wafers. The cells are connected in a Wheatstone bridge the output of which drives a potentiometer recorder, 14, Fig. 5 (not shown).
