Abstract

102,466. Herbert, W. Aug. 7, 1916. Washing-machines with enclosed rotary receptacles of the horizontal type with an internal rotary perforated drum described in Specification 19806/97, are provided with doors at both ends of the drum and of the casing in order that the goods may be inserted at one end and removed from the other, as is necessary when the apparatus is employed for disinfecting by the supply of steam in place of the washing-liquid. Fig. 4 shows the apparatus in plan view, the fixed cylindrical casing 1 having end doors 3, 18 and containing the drum 4, Fig. 6, mounted upon a shaft 7, which is divided by one or more partitions 6 into compartments, each of which has a door 5 at each end. For convenience in access to the doors, the driving-gear, which comprises the usual fast and loose pulleys 11, 12, 14, a threebevel reversing-gear 8, 9, 10, and a hand turning-gear 17, 15, is placed at a distance from the casing, the shaft 7 rotating within a fixed tubular sleeve 19. Inlet and outlet connexions 20 are furnished above and below for steam and liquor supply and discharge, a protecting guard may enclose the driving-mechanism, and the driving- mechanism may be placed in a different room from the machine, as shown in Fig. 4, or the machine may be built into a wall so that feeding and removal may take place in separate rooms.
