Abstract

1,024,327. Combs. LEWIS-PARHAM CORPORATION. Oct. 11, 1962, No. 38592/62. Heading A4V. [Also in Division H5] A hair-straightening device comprises a hollow body 10, Figs. 1 and 2, forming a handle, a non-metallic comb 35 having a plurality of parallel teeth 36a, and an electric heating unit 23 associated with a plurality of staggered rows of heat-conducting projections 26 which extend towards the teeth of a comb 35. As shown, radial projections 26 are formed in, or mounted on, a heat exchange sleeve 25 on heating unit 23, this assembly being arranged in the hollowed-out, V-shaped teeth 36a of plastic comb 35, and being accessible through a spring-closed door in wall 33. The projections 26 are in staggered rows, so that hair is tensioned and bent into zig-zag patternbetween them, so as to be straightened when softened by heat, while the scalp is protected by the presence of the relatively cool, non-metallic comb 35. A heat-regulating unit 12 and associated control knob 13 are provided. In Fig. 11, the comb 35 comprises two rows of teeth 36c, 36f which may be separate, or joined at apex 36 g, and heat exchange sleeve 25a is provided with staggered rows or parallel projections.
