Abstract

Al, Mg or Ti is extracted by fusion electrolysis of a mixture including an alkali-metal halide and a halide of the metal to be extracted at a temperature below the melting point of the metal to be extracted and applying the voltage in brief pulses (e.g. of 0.12 sec.) interrupted by longer intervals (e.g. of 1.88 sec.) in which no voltage or a smaller voltage is applied. Examples of electrolytes are NaCl and AlCl3, KCl and MgCl2 or NaF and TiF4. Additionally, the electrolyte may contain a catalyst produced from an addition compound of NH3 with AlCl3 or NH3 with TiCl4 respectively for Al or Ti extraction. An oxide of the metal to be extracted may also be included. The anode may be of the same metal as that being extracted. In an example of extracting Al, the electrolysis is in two stages with a period of pulsed voltage (7 volt pulses) being followed by a period when the voltage is maintained at 1.4 volts.
