Abstract

Phosphoric acid, gypsum, and sodium or potassium fluorosilicate are produced by reacting ground phosphate rock with an aqueous solution of H2SO4 in presence of a sufficient quantity of silica or a source of silica, which is able to react with the fluorine in the phosphate rock and convert substantially the whole of said fluorine into fluosilicate ions, filtering of the pptd. gypsum and precipitating sodium or potassium fluorosilicate by the addition of an aqueous solution containing sodium or potassium ions to the filtrate and filtering off the ppt. The quantity of H2SO4 used is 2.3 to 2.8 parts by weight of 100% acid per part of P2O5 in the raw rock. The source of silica is preferably water soluble being sodium or potassium silicate, but it may be finely divided kieselguhr or clay. The aqueous solution of H2SO4 added in the opening-up stage may contain (NH4)2SO4. If desired the aqueous solution containing the Na or K ions may be added at the opening-up stage in quantities such that after reaction and removal of the gypsum, a saturated solution of Na or K2SiF6 is produced. The quantity of Na or K ions added, calculated as Na2O equivalent is preferably less than 1% by weight of the original rock.
