Abstract
Lactone-containing polymers are prepared by polymerizing or copolymerizing b -(31,41-dihydro -21H-pyran-21-yl)-b -propiolactone <FORM:1022932/C3/1> in the presence of an ionic initiator. Specified initiators include BF3, BF3 etherate, acetyl perchlorate, AlCl3, ZnCl2, TiCl4, FeCl3, CF3COOH, FeCl3/propylene oxide complex, and organo-aluminium compounds. Solvents may be used. Specified comonomers are styrene, a - methylstyrene, isobutene, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate.ALSO:The invention comprises b -(31,41-dihydro-21H-pyran-21-yl) -b -propiolactone. <FORM:1022932/C2/1> It is prepared by reacting 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-carboxaldehyde (acrolein dimer) with ketene.
