Abstract
1,022,717. Making honeycomb sections; corrugating; metal strip feeds. ROHR CORPORATION. Feb. 21, 1964, No. 7286/64. Headings B3A, B3E and B3W] In apparatus for intermittently advancing and corrugating a metal strip, strip 16 from a supply reel 18 is fed between feed rollers 20, 22 and after forming a sagging loop 24 passes between adjustable guide bars 38 along a bed 30, over a roller 31 which projects above the surface of the bed, to a reciprocating corrugating press 42. The strip is intermittently advanced along the bed 30 by a unit comprising a cam 32 cable driven from the press 42 which actuates an arm 34, slidably mounted in members 72, 73, 74 (Fig. 5, not shown) and biased in the retracted position by springs 64, carrying a plate 76 pivotally mounted and dependent therefrom and having a foot 36, of metal, rubber or nylon, attached to the outer end thereof, which is biased towards the roller 31 by adjustable spring means 75, 80. Attached to the camshaft 54 is a two-part pulley 56 which drives the feed roller 20 via a pulley 62. The outer part of the pulley is movable towards and away from the inner part thereof the parts having inner tapered portions, so that the effective diameter thereof is adjustable to regulate the strip feed rate to maintain the loop size constant. The centre portion of the roller 20 is undercut an amount equal to the strip thickness so that the strip is located therein, the outer portion thereof being in contact with roller 22. The roller 20 is biased into contact with the strip and roller 22 by adjustable spring loaded bearing assemblies 87. The retraction of the arm 34 is adjustable via a screw 81 carried by the member 79 and co-operating with the cross bar 73. The press 42 comprises forming and spring loaded holding punches 46a, 46b co-operating with a die 48. In operation the punch 46b seats the two last formed corrugations in the die 48 whilst a number of corrugations which have just moved clear of the press are pressed between and elongated a predetermined amount by adjustable members 90, 91 mounted thereon. Continued lowering of the punch ram bottoms the punch 46b to securely hold the strip whilst the punch 46a forms a corrugation in the portion thereof which bridges the first portion of the die 48. The strip is drawn forward under the stationary foot by the punch as it forms the corrugation in the lower die whilst the cam 32 rotates into a position whereby the arm 34 may retract and cam the foot rearwards over the stationary strip. Subsequently the punches are raised and the cam actuates the arm which causes the foot to advance the strip one corrugation over the freely rotatable roller 31. Lengths of corrugated strip may be welded at their nodes to form a honeycomb section which may be sandwiched between a pair of flat metal sheets.
