Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1022749/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are H or methyl and R3 and R4 are H, C1-6-alkyl, C1-6-alkoxy-carbonyl or monocarboxylic acyl. Specified are alphatocopheryl cinnamates substituted as follows: 3,4 - dihydroxy; 3,4 - dimethoxycarbonyloxy; 3,4 - diethoxycarbonyloxy; 3,4 - diacetoxy; 3 - methoxy - 4 - methoxycarbonyloxy; 3-methoxy - 4 - ethoxycarbonyloxy; 3 - methoxy-4 - hydroxy. The compounds are prepared by reacting together the corresponding tocopherol and 3,4-disubstituted cinnamic acid or a reactive derivative of the latter; alternatively, where one or both of R3 and R4 are hydroxy, the corresponding alkoxycarbonyloxy or acyloxy compounds are first prepared and the groups referred to are hydrolysed to hydroxy.
