Abstract

Natural resins, particularly colophony, are disproportionated by first heating with one catalyst, sulphur, by itself, and then adding a second catalyst, iodine, and continuing the heating. From 1 to 10% by weight of sulphur and 0.5 to 2% by weight of iodine may be used, with heating at 180 DEG to 250 DEG C. for 30 minutes to 10 hours in each instance. The process may be carried out with or without a solvent. The product may be purified by dissolving in an aliphatic solvent, filtering and distilling the solvent. Examples are given.
