Abstract

1,021,535. Machine tool details. HENSOLDT UND SOHNE, OPTISCHE WERKE A.G. Nov. 15, 1963 [Dec. 11, 1962], No. 45190/63. Heading B3B. [Also in Division G1] Means for measuring lengths or angles comprises a measuring scale 10 on an endless ribbon 6 which is pressed against a support 4 by at least one roller 7, 8 carried by a scale-reading device 1. The device is attached to a slide 2. As the slide is traversed, a rack 5 causes rotation of gears 28, 29 driving a counting mechanism 31 and frictional drive of the ribbon 6 round supporting rollers 7, 8, 9. The graduations on the ribbon are projected on to a screen 15 to fall between gauge marks 17. To centralize the visible graduation, the projection lens 11 can be adjusted by a graduated knob 20 and a screw 19. Rotation of the knob is indicated by the counting mechanism. 27. The counting mechanism 31 can be reset by a clutch knob 34 and can be set to count forwards or backwards by a reversing clutch controlled by a knob 36. The track 4 on which the ribbon is rolled is cleaned by scrapers 104, 105 and the device is held downwardly by springs 41, 42 and a magnet 44. In modifications, the track 4 is magnetic, or the ribbon is perforated and advanced by the gearing 29, or the ribbon carries magnetic blocks and is guided round polygonal rollers or magnetic rollers, or the ribbon carries rectangular prisms which serve to transmit images of a grid to cause light impulses to actuate a counting mechanism, or a square-toothed conducting line is printed on a plastic ribbon and the displacements are measured by a linear induction position device, or the ribbon has a slotted panel overlying it to produce pulses in photo-electric cells, or the ribbon carries light and dark areas co-operating with three photo-electric cells. The scrapers 104, 105 may be replaced by magnets. For reading a circular scale 110, Fig. 14, the arrangement is as shown. The ribbon may carry a scale and the magnets may be electromagnets.
