Abstract

1,021,596. Container closures; plastics containers. FOSTER GRANT CO., Inc. June 11, 1964, No. 24378/64. Headings B8D and B8T. An upstanding peripheral wall 18 of a resilient plastics removable snap-fitting lid 11 of a resilient plastics integrally moulded circular container 10 fits inside the container mouth with a bead 21 on the lid fitting within a channel 24 on the container. A first seal is provided at parts 20, 25 and a second seal at parts 17, 27. Small spaces are provided between the parts 16-26, 18-29 and rims 14-19, and when gas is generated within the container by its contents, the central part 15 of the lid 11 flexes upwardly breaking the first seal 20-25 and the lower portion of the second seal 17-27 whereby the gas escapes along the passage formed between the bead 21 and channel 24 and by-passes the second seal through passages in flutes 30 formed around the part 27. The lower ends of the passages of the flutes 30 contact the interior of the container when the second seal 17-27 is partially broken and their upper ends contact the space between the parts 18, 29. After gas release, the part 15 of the lid returns to its original position and the seals are re-formed. To facilitate stacking the bottom of the container is recessed and there is provided an annular rib 22 on the lid and inward projections 23 spaced apart along the part 18.
