Abstract
Epichlorohydrin is prepared by dehydrochlorinating 1,2-dichloropropanol-(3) with at least a stoichiometric amount of alkaline reagents in an aqueous medium at a reaction temperature such that the mixture distilling off at the head of a separating column which is directly attached to the reaction vessel is at a temperature of 89 DEG to 98 DEG C. wherein the 1,2-di-chloropropanol is emulsified in the reaction mixture in amounts of 30-60 weight per cent based upon the reaction mixture. The 1,2-di-chloropropanol may be employed in a pure form or as the reaction product from the process of Specification 1,014,456. The distillate from the column may be passed to a separator wherein water and the crude epichlorohydrin are separated, the water, if desired, being recycled to the reactor and the epichlorohydrin further purified in a rectifying column. In one embodiment a falling film evaporator is connected to the reaction vessel, preferably via a siphon to maintain a constant level, and the condensed head therefrom recycled to the reaction vessel.
