1,020,700. Dog leads and collars, THERATRONIC CORP. OF AMERICA. Jan. 20, 1965, No. 2509/65. Heading A1M. A retractable leash device comprises a frame arranged to be attached to a collar, a reel rotatably mounted in the frame and having one end of the lead wound on it, a spring mounted on the frame to drive the reel in a direction to wind up the lead, and a brake member movable substantially tangential to the reel and spring biased to a position in which it is wedged between the reel and the frame. In Fig. 5 the lead 12 is wound on a reel 11 controlled by a spring 21 having one end secured to a spool 20 and the other coiled on spool 23. The brake 14 is slidably attached to the frame by bracket 27 and has an arm 28 spring urged into contact with the reel and frame. Cylinder 25 acts as both a lead handle and a stop. The side plates of frame 19 are adapted to be secured to the ends of a collar. The lead may be wound on a reel having a slotted inner periphery, a helical spring being secured at one end in the slots and at the other to a post extending through the frame to wind in the lead.
