Abstract

1,020,579. Reels. DECCA Ltd. Oct. 28, 1963 [Aug. 14, 1962], No. 31191/62. Heading B8M. [Also in Division G5] A spool for magnetic tape comprises a rigid hub carrying two flanges, each flange comprising a hollow rigid structure. As shown in Fig. 1 each flange may comprise a pair of aluminium alloy sheets 13 and 14 secured together at their outer edges and separated at their inner edges by an aluminium alloy spacer 16, the spacers 16 being secured to an aluminium alloy hub 17 by bolts 18. The inner sheets 13 are flat and parallel to each other, and the outer sheets may be impressed with radial ribs. The spaces between the sheets may be filled with a foamed material to increase rigidity without appreciably increasing the moment of inertia. An access hole (not shown in Fig. 1) may be provided in one of the flanges and may be provided with a spacer round its periphery, or a rim may be formed round the hole in each sheet, the rim of one sheet being directed towards and fitting closely in the rim of the other sheet. The hub may be encircled by a rubber tyre 35 and may be provided with holes which also extend through spacer members 16 for receiving a soft iron record ring 29 and a flanged handle 28 as described in Specification 818,554.
