Abstract

A body of plastic material is rendered antistatic by incorporating into the material prior to final formation of the body a mixture of siloxanes containing the unit ­Si-M-OSO3X, wherein M is an alkylene or substituted alkylene radical linking silicon to oxygen through at least 3 carbon atoms and X is H, a metal equivalent of H or an ammonium or substituted ammonium group. The siloxanes are described in Specifications 942,812 and 1,020,301, and are usually used in amount of 0.01 to 5% by wt. of the final plastic body. Plastic materials specified are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylacetate, acrylonitrile - butadiene - styrene copolymers, poly(meth)acrylonitrile, poly(meth)acrylic acid esters, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, and mixtures thereof. The siloxanes can be incorporated into the plastic material, e.g. by admixture with plasticizers, impregnation and mechanical grinding with granules. In Examples: (1) a siloxane mixture of the average formula <FORM:1020302/C3/1> wherein R4=85% (CH3)3Si and 15% C2H5 and X is triethanolammonium, was admixed with polyvinylchloride and polyvinylacetate, and the mix was compression moulded to produce gramophone records; and (2) a similar siloxane was admixed with low pressure polyethylene granules and the resulting mix was processed into a plate by injection moulding.
