Abstract

Organic polymers are rendered resistant to electrostatic charge by incorporation of one or more substituted oxalic acid amides of formula <FORM:1020298/C3/1> where X is <FORM:1020298/C3/2> or-OR4, R is a C12- 24 alkyl, R1, R2 and R3 are H or a C1- 24 alkyl and R4 is a C1- 24 alkyl, the groups R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 may be substituted by halogens, amino, substituted amino, hydroxy, alkoxy or carboxyalkyl groups. The polymer may be polystyrene, a copolymer of styrene and butadiene, acrylonitrile and/or vinyl carbazole, polyvinyl chloride, a polyolefine, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene - (1), polyoctadecene - (1), poly - (4 - phenyl butene-1) or polyvinyl cyclohexene, polyacrylonitrile, poly-(acrylic or methacrylic) acid ester, polyoxymethylene, a polyterephthalate, a polycarbonate, a polyamide, a polyurethane, an epoxide resin hardened with a basic reagent, or a polyester, e.g. derived by condensing ethylene glycol, maleic anhydride and phthalic acid an then polymerizing with styrene in the presence of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, cobalt naphthenate and the oxalic amide. The composition may contain 0.1-7% of the oxalic acid amide which may be oxalic acid N-methyl N-stearyl amide (amide or ethyl ester), oxalic acid N,N-disteryl amide butyl ester, oxalic acid N-lauryl amide methyl ester, oxalic acid N-stearyl amide amide or oxalic acid di-(N-stearyl amide). The compositions may be granulated and mouled into plates.
