Abstract

Lubricating oils or fuel oils comprise as detergents, succinimides obtained by reacting monoalkyl or dialkyl substituted derivatives of urea, guanidine, aminoguanidine or biguanide, or basic salts of monoalkyl or dialkyl derivatives of guanidine or biguanide, with succinic anhydride, alkyl succinic anhydrides or alkenyl succinic anhydrides. Preferred compounds are the N - hydrocarbyl - 1 - polybutenyl - succinimido-formamides, the N-hydrocarbyl-1-polybutenyl - succinimidoformamidines, the 1 - alkyl - 3 - polybutenylsuccinimidoguanidines, and the 1 - (3 - alkyl - guanidino) - 1 - polybutenylsuccinimidomethyleneimines. The detergents may be added to gasoline or to naphthenic or paraffinic base oils, oils derived from coal products, alkylene polymers, alkylene oxide polymers, chlorinated hydrocarbon polymers, dicarboxylic acid esters, alkylated benzenes, silicate esters, or silicon polymers. Conventional additives also may be present, e.g. Zn dihexyl or mixed alkyl phosphorodithioates and/or Ba or Ca salts of phosphorus sulphide-olefin polymer reaction products.ALSO:A polyalkenyl succinimide is obtained by reacting a monoalkyl or dialkyl substituted derivative of urea, guanidine, aminoguanidine or biguanide, or a basic salt of a monoalkyl or dialkyl derivative of guanidine or biguanide with a polyalkenyl succinic anhydride. The examples describe the preparation of N-hydrocarbyl - 1 - polybutenyl - succinimidoformamides, N - hydrocarbyl - 1 - polybutenylsuccinimidoformamidines, 1 - alkyl - 3 - polybutenylsuccinimidoguanidines, and 1 - (3-alkylguanidino) - 1 - polybutenylsuccinimidomethyleneimines. The products find application as detergency additives in oils and fuels.ALSO:A succinimide is prepared by reacting a mono alkyl or dialkyl substituted derivative of urea, guanidine, aminoguanidine or biguanide, or a basic salt of a monoalkyl or dialkyl derivative of guanidine or biguanide, with succinic anhydride, an alkyl succinic anhydride or an alkenyl succinic anhydride. The examples are all illustrative of preparations wherein alkenyl succinic anhydrides derived from olefin polymers are used (see Division C3), but also illustrate the preparation of the following intermediates: Example 1, n-butylurea from n-butylamine + potassium cyanate in the presence of acetic acid. Example 2, Cyclohexylguanidine acetate from cyclohexylamine + cyanamide in the presence of acetic acid. Example 2, cyclohexylgxanidine acetate from cyclohexylamine + cyanamide in the presence of acetic acid. Examples 3 and 6 n-(Butyl or Dodecyl) guanidine bicarbonate from n-(butyl or dodecyl) amine + cyanamide in the presence of acetic acid followed by treatment with carbon dioxide. Example 5, t-Dodecylguanidine acetate from t-dodecylamine + cyanamide in the presence of acetic acid.
