Abstract

The invention comprises (with certain exceptions) compounds of Formulae (I) and (II) wherein X is halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy or acyloxy <FORM:1019120/C2/1> <FORM:1019120/C2/2> m is 1-5, R1 and R3 are H or an optionall substituted hydrocarbyl group, R2 is an optionally substituted aliphatic hydrocarbyl group, or alternatively NR1R2 is a heterocyclic ring, n is 1-3 and Y is an n-valent anion. Compounds (I) are in general prepared by reacting the substituted benzaldehyde with the appropriate hydrazine derivative, optionally followed by acylation. Compounds (II) are prepared by reaction of (I) with R3Y.ALSO:A method of eradicating or controlling weeds in crop areas comprises applying thereto a compound of formula (I) or (II) wherein X is halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy or acyloxy, m is 1-5, R1, R2 and R3 are optionally substituted hydrocarbyl groups (or R1 and R3 may be H) or alternatively NR1R2 is a heterocyclic ring, n is 1-3 and Y is an n-valent anion. <FORM:1019120/A5-A6/1> The compound may be employed as granules or in the form of a wettable powder, aqueous dispersion, dust, concentrate, solution, emulsifiable concentrate or emulsion.
