Abstract

1,018,550. Magnetic playback heads. AMPEX CORPORATION. May 19, 1964 [Sept. 5, 1963], No. 20588/64. Heading G5R. [Also in Division H3] A parametric playback head comprises a pair of magnetic polepieces 11, 12 (Fig. 1) positioned to form a gap for sensing flux in an adjacent magnetic medium 15, such as a tape or a drum, and a magnetic flux sensitive parametric amplifier device 17 is positioned in series with the magnetic circuit of the polepieces, for example in a back gap as shown. The device 17 is fed from a source 30 with a pumping signal which preferably has a frequency eight times the maximum input frequency recorded on the tape 15, for example 80 Mc/s., and the output winding 36 is tuned to half the pump frequency to suppress the pump signal. The head can read information such as digital signals from the medium 15 whilst the latter is stationary. Parametric devices.-Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the parametric device 17 which comprises a glass or like substrate 20 on which diagonal conducting stripes 38 are applied and coated with insulation. A permalloy film 41 is deposited over the insulation and annealed to have a preferred direction of magnetization parallel to one side of the device. An insulating coating is applied over the film, followed by an output winding 35, further insulation, and upper stripes 47 which connect to the lower stripes 38 to form the pump winding.
