Abstract
1,018,174. Evaporators ; distilling sea-water. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. July 22, 1964, No. 29632/64. Heading B1B. Liquid is subjected to distillation in a multistage flash type evaporator wherein the flash chambers A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>... are arranged so that the liquid undergoing evaporation flows in a substantially horizontal zig-zag or serpentine path through the evaporator, the liquid turning through an angle of 90 degrees in passing from one chamber to the next. The apparatus is suitable for producing distilled water from sea water on a ship. The hot sea water enters the first chamber A<SP>1</SP> through channel 1, where flashing takes place. The sea water then flows, without turning, into chamber A<SP>2</SP> through the channel shown ; and further flashing occurs. The water turns through 90 degrees in order to flow into chamber A<SP>3</SP>, and also as it flows into each subsequent chamber. The residual brine leaves the last chamber through outlet 3. The vapours flashed off in the chambers are condensed in condensers B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>... , which are arranged above the flash chambers, each condenser extending the length of two flash chambers and being approximately half the width of a flash chamber. The condensate flows from the first condenser through the subsequent condensers to an outlet.
