Abstract

Systems depending on the use of two or more machines.-When a synchronous machine is started by an auxiliary motor, non-inductive resistances are shunted across the coils or windings through which current is supplied to the synchronous machine. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the windings 13, 14, 15 of the synchronous motor A and the windings 6, 7, 8 of the auxiliary starting-motor B are connected in series, and the windings 6, 7, 8 are shunted by non-inductive resistances 9, 10, 11, which may be short-circuited by the switch 12. When the main switch 4 is closed, the motor A is driven by the motor B until its speed is near the synchronous speed. The field switch 21 is then closed to excite the motor A and the switch 12 is closed to short-circuit the resistances 9, 10, 11 and the auxiliary motor windings 6, 7, 8. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, a rotary converter A is started by an auxiliary motor B with windings connected across the transformer 5. The converter slip-rings are connected to the transformer through inductive resistances 9<1>, 10<1>, 11' shunted by non-inductive resistances 9, 10, 11 with the switch 12 in its first position. All the resistances are short-circuited at synchronism by the operation of the switch 12 toits second position.
