Abstract

<PICT:1017871/C4-C5/1> A combustible gas is made by a cyclic process which includes a plant-heating and gas-making periods, the process comprising gasifying a hydrocarbon oil with a hydrogen-containing gas (steam) in a zone 27, gasifying solid fuel (coke) with steam in a second zone 1, washing the oil gas and the water gas separately at 88, 65 respectively, passing the washed water gas through a heated, catalytic co-conversion apparatus 78, mixing the washed oil gas and the converted water gas, e.g. at 100, and generating blow gases from the coke in the zone 1 to heat that zone, and combusting the blow gases, e.g. at 16, to heat the zone 27. The apparatus operates as follows:-(a) During plant-heating, valves 9, 15, 60 are open and the rest shut, air being supplied through a pipe 8 to the coke 6 to form blow gases which are combusted at 16 by admitting secondary air through a pipe 17. Fuel oil may be burnt at 31, and hot gases pass via fixing chamber 41 and riser conduit 44 to a waste heat boiler 57 and atmosphere at 60. Free CO may be combusted in 44 by admitting tertiary air at 49, (b) steam purging of zones 1, 27 and 42, 44 from pipes 11, 28 follows, (c) up-run gas-making is started by opening valves 21, 104, and closing 15, 60. Steam is admitted by pipe 11 to the zone 1, water gas passing to the wash box 65, scrubber 68, and a holder 73. Simultaneously, oil gas is made at 27, by steam entering at 28 and oil at 39, the gas being "fixed" at 42, washed at 88 and cooled and scrubbed at 93, (d) water gas is made during a back-run, where steam is passed from 54 through the chamber 42 and zones 27, 1, water gas passing via pipe 25 or (e) during a down-run, where steam is admitted to the zone 1 at 62, valve 15 being closed. Oil gas may be made during the down-run, (f) steam purging from 11 via zone 1 to the wash box 65 completes the cycle. The water gas is boosted at 76 and after CO-conversion at 78, passes via a cooler 82 to join the oil gas in holder 100. Two specific examples are described.
