Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A pressure vessel or conduit comprises an inner tubular sleeve comprising a winding of crepe paper 16 impregnated with a solid thermosetting resin, e.g. of the epoxy type, and an outer layer of glass fibre 12 wound around the inner sleeve and impregnated with solid thermosetting synthetic resin by which it is bonded to the inner sleeve. The inner sleeve may comprise a multi-layer winding of resinimpregnated crepe paper tape, each layer of the sleeve being a helical winding with an overlap between adjacent turns, and the adjacent layers of the sleeve being windings of opposite hand. In a method of making a pressure cylinder crepe paper 16 is helically wound on to a rotary mandrel 10, which dips into a bath 14 containing the epoxy resin 15, to form a triple layer each layer being wound of opposite hand to the previous layer and with a half-inch gap between successive turns. Then before the resin is cured the glass fibre outer layer 12 is helically wound on top of the paper using a shuttle 17 to lay the fibre roving helically with wide spaces between successive turns, until a desired thickness of wall has been achieved. The resins of the inner sleeve and outer layer are then simultaneously cured to bond the two together.
