Abstract
Curable compositions comprise a b -stage reaction product formed by the partial reaction of an epoxide resin with an aromatic amine containing 2 or more reactive amino hydrogen atoms per molecule and an aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid. The hydroxy acid may be present during the formation of the B-stage product. The hydroxy acids are preferably of the formulae <FORM:1017699/C3/1> or <FORM:1017699/C3/2> or <FORM:1017699/C3/3> wherein R1, R2, R5 and R6 are each a hydrogen or halogen atom, or hydroxyl, carboxyl, alkyl or nitro groups; R3 and R2 are each hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, and X is carbon-carbon bond, -O-, -S-, -CO-, -S-S-, -SO-, -SO2- or <FORM:1017699/C3/4> where R7 and R8 are each hydrogen atoms, or alkyl or aryl groups. The aromatic amines may be mono- or poly-amines, aminobenzoic acids or aminophenols. The epoxy resins may be poly-glycidyl esters of polycarboxylic acids, poly-glycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols, phenol-formaldehyde condensation products or aminoalcohols, or aminopolyepoxides. In examples the compositions of the invention are compared with similar compositions in which the hydroxy acid is replaced by phenol, benzoic acid, phenol plus benzoic acid, resorcinol or anthranilic acid, or in which it is omitted.
