Abstract

1,017,640. Printing apparatus. THE PRINTING, PACKAGING & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 18, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963], No. 45621/63. Heading B6C. In a rotary printing press comprising a plate cylinder 1 and a stationary impression pad 2 the material to be printed is applied to the cylinder by compressed air issuing from the undersurface of the pad, the air being supplied and distributed through inlet 24, longitudinal bore 23, outlets 26, 27 and a longitudinal groove 25. Limited movement between the pad and the cylinder is provided through the mounting of the pad in the frame of the press, stub axles 9 being journalled in large frame apertures 10. A pair of adjustable resilient mountings 8 mounted on the frame at each end of the pad serves to hold the latter in position whilst providing forces arranged to balance the forces exerted on the pad by the air under pressure thereby maintaining a predetermined gap between the pad and the material. Each mounting 8 comprises a spring housed in a casing and acting on a ball 21 engaging a suitable detent in the pad. The Specification also states that the pad 2 may be incorporated in an oscillating flat-bed press.
