Abstract
Straight chain paraffins are removed from petroleum fractions containing them and having a mean molecular weight corresponding to at least C10 by cultivating a strain of yeast adapted to grow on straight chain hydrocarbons in the presence of the petroleum fraction, an aqueous nutrient and a gas containing oxygen and separating from the product a petroleum fraction of reduced n-paraffin content and yeast. The growth product is recovered as an emulsion which is separated by centrifuging in the presence of a surfactant. Hydrocarbons are recovered from the liquid phase while the pasty phase of yeast impregnated with hydrocarbons and aqueous medium is washed and centrifuged to recover a pure yeast. The process is particularly suitable for dewaxing gas oils.ALSO:Yeast is produced in a process in which straight chain paraffins are removed from petroleum fractions, containing them and having a mean molecular weight corresponding to at least C10, by cultivating a strain of yeast adapted to grow on straight chain hydrocarbons in the presence of the petroleum fraction, an aqueous nutrient and a gas containing oxygen, and separating from the product a petroleum fraction of reduced n-paraffin content and yeast. The growth product is recovered as an emulsion which is separated by centrifuging in the presence of a surfactant. The process is particularly suitable for dewaxing gas oils.
