Abstract

Water soluble barium salts (e.g. acetate) are prepared by contacting an aqueous solution of barium sulphide either with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin in the sodium or potassium form or a strongly basic anion exchange resin in acetate form (the solution isolated from the anion exchange resin being one containing the barium acetate), and thereafter contacting the isolated exchange resin with an aqueous solution (e.g. hot) containing a sodium or potassium acetate to regenerate the resin at least partially and simultaneously insofar as the cation exchange resin is concerned, yield a solution containing the required barium acetate. The barium sulphide solution may be passed through a column or bed of the resin, may comprise an aqueous extract of clinker produced by coke or like reduction of barytes, and may be used at 50-100 DEG C. If the hydroxide form of the anion exchange resin is initially used, the required barium salt is obtained after the first cycle. Barium acetate is prepared in Example 4.ALSO:Water soluble barium salts (e.g. chloride, nitrate) are prepared by contacting an aqueous solution of barium sulphide either with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin in the sodium or potassium form or a strongly basic anion exchange resin whose anion corresponds to the anion of the barium salt required, the solution and resin being employed in amounts such that, at least in the case of the anion resin, the resin does not become exhausted (the solution isolated from the anion exchange resin being one containing the desired barium salt), and thereafter contacting the isolated exchange resin with an aqueous solution (e.g. hot) containing a sodium or potassium salt (whose anion corresponds to the anion of the barium salt required) to regenerate the resin at least partially and simultaneously insofar as the cation exchange resin is concerned, yield a solution containing the required barium salt.
