Abstract

A worsted-type stretch fabric has weft of worsted fibres with a twistless multifilament core of textured nylon or polyester. The yarn may be singles, in which case the core is given such a twist, before combining with the worsted roving, that it is removed during spinning; alternatively, a twistless core may be used, the twist imparted to it during spinning being removed by plying two or more yarns together; the twist is set by steaming before weaving or, in the second case, before plying. Weaving is effected with the warp reeded out so that the weft can bulk when the fabric is finished in the relaxed condition. The warp may be ordinary worsted yarn to produce a fabric having weftwise stretch, or may be the same as the warp to produce two-way stretch. Polyester, nylon, or cotton fibres may be blended with the worsted in the warp and/or weft. Details of preferred ranges of grade of wool, twist, and threads per inch are given. Finishing. The following sequence of operations is performed without tension: singeing; Birch crabbing at about 30 yds. per min. with water temperatures in successive bowls of 50 DEG C., 61 DEG , 78 DEG , 90 DEG , 90 DEG , 100 DEG , 32 DEG ; Yorkshire crabbing in boiling water for 10 mins.; relaxing by drying in warm air at 123 DEG C. for 5 mins.; dry heat setting (e.g. in a Famatex drier) at, say, 200 DEG C.; scouring in a dye kettle, using a non-alkaline detergent, for 30 mins. at about 50 DEG C., followed by rinsing; treating in boiling water for 30 mins; dyeing; dry relaxing as above; visual examination; shearing; dry heat setting as above; cold water shrinking at 32 DEG C. in a bath containing a wetting agent; loop drying at 123 DEG C. in air at 20 yds per min. for 5 mins.; repetition of cold water shrinking and loop drying; full decating in autoclave at 10 lb. per sq. in. steam for 3 min. followed by cooling for 8 min.
