Abstract
A polymerizing adhesive for joining polyvinyl chloride surfaces together comprises chlorine-containing and/or acrylic polymers dissolved in chlorine-containing and/or acrylic and/or styrene-type monomers, the solution having a polarity, i.e. cohesive energy density, similar to or identical with that of polyvinyl chloride, the polymer content of the solution being less than 35%. Polymers specified are polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer, polymethyl methacrylate and polychloroprene. Monomers specified are methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, methyl styrene and dichlorostyrene. Also present in the adhesives may be hardeners, e.g. benzoyl peroxide mixed with dimethyl aniline or triphenylmethane triisocyanate. The adhesives set by polymerization at room temperature.
