Abstract

Saturated aliphatic mono-ketones are prepared by reacting a conjugated diene of formula <FORM:1015929/C2/1> where R1, R2, R4, R5 and R6 ar each H or alkyl and R3 is alkyl, with aqueous solutions of a mineral acid at an elevated temperature. Specified dienes are isoprene and 2,3-dimethyl butadiene which are converted to methyl isopropyl ketone and methyl-tert.-butyl ketone respectively. A fraction containing C5- 7 dienes prepared by the cracking of petroleum is also referred to. The acids specified are sulphuric, phosphoric and hydrochloric. Suitable temperatures are 50-150 DEG C. The aqueous acid preferably contains a copper chloride, cuprous chloride in hydrochloric acid being specified.
