Abstract

Mixtures of saturated and unsaturated fatty triglycerides are separated into saturated and unsaturated fractions by the fractional crystallization of a solution of the triglycerides which contains as a crystal promoter 0.01-1% of a compound having a nucleus to which are attached 4-700 saturated or partially saturated C12-C22 fatty acyl chains; on cooling, preferably through 75 DEG F. within 1 minute, the crystal habit of the more saturated fraction is so modified as to permit easy separation by filtration. The weight ration of solvent to triglycerides is generally 1-2 : 1 and suitable solvents are acetone and a 9 : 1 (vol.) acetone/methanol mixture. Suitable crystal promoters are polyvinyl fatty acid esters, methyl glucoside tetrastearate, 2-hydroxypropyl sucrose palmitate, aluminium stearate in an oil suspension, sucrose fatty esters, polymerized triglycerides obtained by heating to 260-280 DEG F. in the presence of air and an iron powder catalyst, and polyamides obtained from di- or tri-merized saturated and unsaturated fatty acid mixtures and alkylene diamines.ALSO:Mixtures of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are separated into saturated and unsaturated fractions by fractional crystallization of a solution of the fatty acids which contains as a crystal promoter 0.01-1% of a compound having a nucleus to which are attached 4-700 saturated or partially saturated C12-22-fatty acyl chains; on cooling, preferably through 75 DEG F. within 1 minute, the crystal habit of the more saturated fraction is so modified as to permit easy separation by filtration. The weight ratio of solvent to fatty acids is generally 1-2: 1 and suitable solvents are acetone and a 9: 1 (vol.) acetone/methanol mixture. Suitable crystal promoters are polyvinyl fatty acid esters, methyl glucoside tetrastearate, 2-hydroxypropyl sucrose palmitate, aluminium stearate in an oil suspension, sucrose fatty esters and preferably polymerized triglycerides obtained by heating to 260-280 DEG F. in the presence of air and an iron powder catalyst, and polyamides obtained from di- or tri-merized unsaturated fatty acids and alkylene diamines.
