Abstract

1,015,092. Injection moulding machines. HUPFIELD BROS. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1963 [Oct. 30, 1962], No. 41005/62. Heading B5A. In an injection moulding machine having an injection plunger 7 reciprocable within an axially fixed feed screw 2, the injection cylinder 3 and the head of the plunger 7 are readily detachable to adapt the machine for use with different capacity moulds. The plunger 7 comprises two separate abutting sections 25, 26, the section 25 being removable after removal of a portion 3 of the injection cylinder. The plunger is moved forwardly by a ram 24, return movement being effected by material fed forwardly by the screw 2 through bores 37 in the plunger 7. Each bore contains a one-way valve 38. The feed screw 2 is driven through a gear 23 by an electric motor 21 controlled by a micro switch 52 (Fig. 3, not shown). This switch is operable by an adjustable sleeve linked with the plunger assembly to limit the flow of material to be injected. The machine has heaters 39, 41 controlled by thermocouples 40, 42 respectively. Material in a feed hopper 8 is kept cool by cooling liquid passages 43. The length of the feed screw is not greater than ten times and not less than three times its diameter. The flight length to diameter ratio of the screw 2 should be between 30: 1 and 50: 1.
