Abstract
1,014,707. Casting machines. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 17, 1964 [March 5, 1964], No. 33618/64. Drawings to Specification. Heading B3F. A method of casting metal which expands as it solidifies in a multi-part mould of similar metal, comprises the steps of pouring molten metal into the mould while maintaining a clamping pressure on the mould parts, then cooling, and while the casting is undergoing expansion as it is cooled, maintaining a reduced holding pressure on the mould parts which will permit them to move apart due to the expansion of the casting but maintain the mould parts in supporting engagement with the casting. The mould is closed by an hydraulic cylinder under relatively low fluid pressure which before filling is intensified by a differential piston. A predetermined time after filling, a timer operates solenoid valves to release the intensified pressure so that the mould is held closed by the relatively low pressure which yields to the expansion of the casting and allows the mould to open slightly.
