Abstract

1,014,232. Fuel cells. MINISTER OF DEFENCE (Germany). Jan. 10, 1964 [Jan. 23, 1963], No. 1311/64. Heading H1B. In operating a fuel battery with hydrazine as the fuel, hydrogen peroxide is used as the oxidant and hydrazine-electrolyte and hydrogen peroxide-electrolyte mixtures are guided over electrodes in circuits separated by a diaphragm inside the cell. The concentrations of the reactants are low enough to prevent mixing through the diaphragm. The hydrazine electrode may be of porous nickel, platinized nickel, or platinized carbon, and the H 2 O 2 electrode of porous silver, silver-plated carbon, platinized nickel, platinized carbon, or a sintered mixture of powdered silver and nickel. The diaphragm may be made from a basic anion exchange material. In an example, the electrolyte is 3N KOH, the hydrazine concentration 0.1 M, and the H 2 O 2 concentration 1% by weight.
