Abstract
1,012,694. Automatic brake adjusters. KELSEY HAYES CO. Oct. 11, 1963 [Nov. 23, 1962], No. 40138/63. Heading F2E. A shoe-drum brake has an adjustable anchor 49 adapted for engagement by a shoe 12, means 80 normally locking the anchor to prevent adjustment thereof, an adjusting member 61 for adjusting the anchor, means 67 activated by movement of the shoe in the forward direction A for moving the member 61 to an operative position with respect to the anchor, and a lost-motion connection between the shoe and the locking-means 80 taken-up by excessive movement of the shoe in the direction A for releasing the locking means to permit adjustment of the anchor. As shown, the anchor 49 comprises a screw threaded into an opening 48 in the torque plate arm 42 and having a flat head in the form of a star wheel and a flat knurled top surface against which the web 18 of the shoe 12 normally abuts. The top surface is also normally engaged by a roughened surface on the end portion 81 of a spring-loaded slidable locking-member 80 having a stud 88 projecting with play into a slot 84 in the shoe web 18. On excessive movement of the shoe 12 the play will be taken up and the spring 90 compressed to unlock the anchor so as to permit the adjusting member 61 previously moved to the operative position to rotate the anchor. The adjusting member 61 in the form of a bell-crank lever pivoted at 62, has a portion 60 acting as a pawl which engages the teeth 51 on the star wheel and a portion 63 having an aperture 68 through which slidable projects the link 67. The latter is pivotally connected to the shoe web 18 at one end and has a head 69 at the other. On movement of the shoe 12 in the direction A the link 67 will pivot the member 61 against the spring 40 to position the pawl 60 behind one of the teeth 51 of the star wheel so that when the anchor is unlocked (on excessive movement of the shoe) member 61 can rotate the anchor one tooth space under the action of spring 40 to adjust the brake.
