A barrier for use as a gate or hurdle comprises a pair of spaced parallel end bars 10 each having a pair of sockets 13 extending and presenting their mouths inwardly of the barrier each opposite pair to receive the ends of a connecting bar 14, a plurality of tension wires 15 between the members 10 and parallel to the bars 14 to prevent relative outward movement between the bars 10. One or more intermediate bars 16 parallel to the bars 10 may be provided. The bars 16 are held by bars 14 received in recesses in the bars 16 and by the wires 15 under tension received in notches in the bars 16. The wires 15 pass around one bar 10 and have tensioning means 18 on the other bar 10.
