An apparatus, suitable for atomizing a liquid such as water in a ventilating system designed to maintain the moisture content of the air at a predetermined level, comprises two rotatable frusto-conical impellers 16, 17 disposed within a housing 20 and adapted to rotate about a horizontal axis and to project the water through annular grids 24, 25 respectively located in an annular wall 23, a centrifugal fan 18 designed to blow air through an annular duct 29 between the wall 23 and the housing 20 and to convey the water spray passing through said grids through an outlet 27, and an air inlet 36 for the fan 18, said inlet 36 being small relative to the outlet 27 and being coaxial with the outlet, the impellers 16, 17 and the fan 18. The water is fed to the impellers by ducts 33 connected by a common pipe to a pump 32 and a reservoir 31. Water not sufficiently atomized is flung into a gutter 26a and is directed by a baffle 28 into a reservoir 29a. Water which does not mix with the air in duct 29 is also directed into the reservoir 29a via a frusto-conical portion 21 of the housing and a gutter 22. A pipe 30 leads water from the reservoir 29a back to the reservoir 31. An electric motor 14 drives the fan 18, the impellers 16, 17 and an end hub 17a. The apparatus is located in an air duct and air enters radially through apertures 34. The impellers and the wall 23 &c. are assembled by passing them through the relatively large outlet 27.
